Young Apprentices at Sheringham Primary School

On 16th May four Young Apprenticeship students from City of Norwich School visited Sheringham Primary school to deliver and help install some outside play equipment that they had designed and made.

All of the students are in Year 10 (15 years old) at City of Norwich School and attend EAGIT one day to complete an NVQ Level 2 as part of the Young Apprenticeship programme. The students are undertaking a welding and fabrication pathway through the programme and they work with EAGIT instructor Andy Likins.

A request was made from Alex Burrows, for some play equipment for Sheringham Primary School where he is a teacher. The school provided a ‘wish list' and the Young Apprentices took an item from the list to design and make as an added value project in addition to their normal syllabus work at EAGIT. They designed and manufactured two ‘number lines': long poles with brackets that are attached to the outside wall and a number of sleeves that can have numbers, letters or pictures slotted into them and then hang on the pole and can be moved along - these can be used to improve literacy and numeracy skills in young children and also provide a great opportunity for play.

The number lines were attached to the playground walls by a member of EAGIT staff, who was helped by the Young Apprentices.  They all enjoyed the project enormously and were pleased to see the number lines installed as this completed the process from design through manufacture to delivery and installation for the customer. The children at Sheringham Primary were all very excited to try out there latest piece of playground equipment and the school are keen to work with EAGIT again on future projects.
