Unite present toolkits to apprentice electricians
On 9th December 2008, Apprentices at the EAGIT industrial training centre at Norwich Airport Industrial Estate were congratulated on their efforts now they have entered their second year of training. Unite the union in Building Services Engineering presented Britool toolkits to apprentice electricians and plumbers from local contracting companies.
The 2008 Queens speech outlined how the opportunity for apprenticeships for all suitably qualified school leavers will be passed into law in 2009, with the Government establishing a National Apprenticeships Service (NAS), anticipating that one in five of all young people will be undertaking an apprenticeship by the end of the next decade, and the union is keen to point out to potential apprentices and employers the value of authentic industry recognised apprenticeships and training.
The apprentices are undertaking the JIB (Joint Industry Board) training scheme for Advanced Apprenticeships through the industry's joint training provider JTL, an industry charitable training provider which was jointly established by the union and the Electrical Contractors Association back in 1990. JTL currently has 10,000 apprentices in training in England and Wales, and delivers over 70 per cent of apprentice completions within the Electrical Contracting Industry, as well as rapidly expanding apprenticeships into the Plumbing and Mechanical trades and Engineering Maintenance. The JIB training scheme lasts 4 years and is delivered on block release, tailored to compliment and accredit on site experience with companies.
